TYPES OF FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

There are essentially two main types of fire alarm system available, 'Conventional' and 'Addressable' However these can be further broken down into four main operating types of fire alarm systems available, each type of fire alarm is suited to different applications and have their own advantages and disadvantages based on the application.

CONVENTIONAL FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

A conventional fire detection system uses individual 'zone' wiring, whereby all detectors are individually wired onto a specific zone.

The layout of the building determines how many zones are required, when a fire is detected the zone in fire is displayed at the control panel.

The Alarm devices are wired separately from the fire alarm control panel around the building.

Conventional fire alarm panels are a great solution and a cost effective system for most smaller systems.

TWO WIRE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

Are essentially identical to traditional Conventional fire alarm systems although the fire detection and alarm wiring uses the same cable, this reduces installation time by removing the need to wire separate sounder circuits around the building.

It is probably one of the most common types of fire alarm system installed in smaller premises currently.

Another benefit of a Bi-Wire fire alarm system is the increased use of 'base sounders' this gives a neater finish in a lot of environments and provides a better distribution of fire alarm sounders around the building.

ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

An addressable system is an intelligent solution and allows for near endless programming options to suit all premises types, methods of evacuation and cause & effect strategies.

An addressable fire alarm system uses loop wiring to which a large number of devices can be installed, this can be any combination of Detection Devices, Alarm Devices, Relays and other loop modules, each device is then given an individual numeric address.

This provides a hugely diverse option for larger and more complex sites.

Programming abilities makes an addressable system the most versatile option, Detection and alarm zones can be individually programmed on the system after installation which gives a lot more control over zone layout.

Alarms can be delayed for investigation periods, alert tones or visual indicators can be programmed to operate a staff alarm, prior to a full evacuation alarm, multiple outputs can be easily installed anywhere along the loop making interfacing with other systems and equipment simpler.

Each device on the system is also programmed with an individual description, meaning a fire detected, will show the 'zone in fire' but will also identify the individual device (e.g. Zone 5 - 3rd Floor  - Address 83 : Accounts Office)

Addressable systems really are the most versatile option for any fire alarm system and a must for larger sites and those which require more control.

It is worth noting that there are both 'Open Protocol' & 'Closed Protocol' versions available, Liberty Systems installs 'Open Protocol' systems, which offers the end user a lot more future options and drastically reduces the ongoing maintenance costs of the system.

WIRELESS FIRE ALARM SYSTEM

Wireless Fire Alarm systems are essentially addressable fire alarm systems...Without wires!

The advantage of a wireless system comes from it far quicker installation time as the wiring and first fix of a fire alarm system represents a significant proportion of the cost.

The trade of for this is the increased cost of wireless fire alarm equipment, so a wireless system wouldn't always be the best option, its a perfect solution for rapid deployment or in a premises with finished interiors not wanting the associated disruption of wiring.

Other things to be mindful of with a wireless system is the nature of the property, a wireless survey will be required before installation to determine the number and location of wireless transmitters required.

As the devices are wireless they require battery changes too, this should also be remembered should there be a false alarm, as each false alarm, of extended duration weekly fire alarm tests all reduce the battery life of the alarm devices.

Here at Liberty Systems we provide an 'all inclusive' option on our maintenance packages for wireless fire alarm systems, this means that all system batteries are included in the cost of the maintenance and battery replacement schedules are fixed.
