HOW LONG SHOULD EMERGENCY LIGHTS STAY ON FOR?
Most emergency lighting systems in the UK are required to operate for 180 minutes (3 Hours).
As a minimum an emergency lighting system must be able to operate effectively for a minimum of 1 Hour*, however this is only true in certain circumstances and building users must meet additional criteria when a 1 hour emergency lighting system is installed.
Almost all emergency light fittings on the market have capacity to operate for the full 3 hour duration as standard, and with modern fittings using LED lighting, emergency lights are often brighter, clearer and draw less power from the batteries.
The duration itself is dependent not only on evacuation time but also on whether the premises are evacuated immediately the power and normal lighting fails and are re-occupied immediately the supply is restored.
A minimum duration of 3 hours should be used for emergency escape lighting if the premises are not evacuated immediately, as in the case of sleeping accommodation, for example, or if the premises will be reoccupied immediately the supply is restored without waiting for the batteries to be recharged.
*1 Hour duration Emergency Lighting systems should only be used if the premises are evacuated immediately on supply failure and not reoccupied until full capacity has been restored to the batteries.
