Commercial premises across different sectors often require a differerent approach to the design of their fire alarm systems. The type and configuration of fire detection and alarm system required will depend on factors such as the building's size and layout, its use and occupancy, the nature of the risks present and the building's overall fire strategy.

Depending on these requirements, a system may incorporate point smoke or heat detection, multi-sensor detectors, addressable or conventional fire alarm technology, manual call points and audible or visual alarm devices. More specialist detection can also be incorporated where appropriate, including aspirating smoke detection (ASD) for environments requiring particularly sensitive detection, linear heat detection for applications such as car parks, and other technologies where the characteristics of the building or risk make them appropriate.

Fire alarm systems can also be integrated with other building services where required. This may include remote alarm monitoring, sprinkler system monitoring and interfaces that initiate actions such as door release, smoke ventilation or the controlled shutdown of plant and other services.
